The last time a parcel tax increase was being considered by the Union School District, attendees of a particular (about 3 months prior to the June 6th 2003 election) meeting may recall the members of the School Board stating that not only had Union School District weathered the economic downturn well, but that a further tax increase should not be entertained, and that due to declining student enrollments, and teachers who have decided to retire early, the district should consider closing down a couple of schools and consolidate the student population.
We applaud the foresight and the ability of the school district to have planned so well as to have weathered the current economic storm. What we do not fathom is why these very prudent recommendations are not followed mere months later. On what basis has the Board so suddenly reversed itself?
Why are under-populated schools still open?
Why are we being asked to support more infrastructure that educates fewer students?
Consider what happens when a well-run business faces reduced demand. It closes plants and adjusts its workforce accordingly. Since the demand for Education is down in the Union School District, we urge the voters to send a message to the School Board: Consider reducing capacity until supply meets demand.
When a company is facing reduced demand, it doesn't have the luxury of taking your property, or dipping into your pockets should you decide not to buy its product. Neither should a school board or anyone else.
