Argument Against Measure H

In 2001, the voters of the Cambrian School District passed a parcel tax with 69% of the vote. The voters were remarkably generous given that the dot-com crash was in full swing.

Today the economy still hasn't picked up and the School District wants even more. Responsibility begins at home. We believe that it is time for the district to end its reliance on coming to the voters every two years for more and more tax money.

What's been done with the previous Gann Limit appropriations? What have the extra taxes bought?

Think about this: Because this is a Gann Limit appropriation extension, it need only have 50% plus one of the voters to pass – not the Proposition 13 mandate of two-thirds. The usual fiscal prudence that would go into a tax increase need not be incorporated because of lower voting thresholds.

The only way to make the Cambrian School District develop sound fiscal policies is to force them to come back to the voters when they want to raise taxes again or sell new bonds. By voting against this waiver of the spending limit, we protect ourselves against unwarranted tax increases in the future, and force board leaders to show us what they've done with the generous sums of money we have already voted to give them.

In the interests of living in a well run community which provides for the needs of all its residents, it is important to hold the decision-makers accountable. Right now, by perpetuating a Gann Limit appropriation, we encourage a culture which wishes to evade accountability. We therefore urge you to vote NO on Measure H.

It is possible to be for students, for education, and against H.
