The libraries assert the cost of Measure B is only $8.34 "more".
In addition to the current parcel tax [$33.66-$252.45/acre], homeowners already finance the library through property taxes. And in some cities [Saratoga and Los Altos] homeowners pay a second library parcel tax [for facilities]. Although the library asserts Measure B will "automatically expire in 7 years," don't kid yourself. With $800,000 in State cuts plus "more...on the way," who pays the shortfall? Isn't it time the rest of society pays its fair share?
The library proposes renters [who pay nothing] vote, whereas many homeowners [who are nonresidents] do NOT. Although all homeowners COULD have been included in the election, the library chose otherwise. How would you feel if taxed, yet denied the vote?
New taxes are not passed onto tenants. Rents are based upon "what the market will bear" [given today's depressed rental market, no additional taxes can be borne]. Furthermore, who do homeowner-occupants pass their taxes onto?
The problem's not the $42-$315/acre.
The problems are:
This "voting scheme" which disenfranchises nonresident homeowners;
"Ends justifying the means" mentality;
Playing the "you support literacy and learning, don't you?" guilt card; Refusal to live within one's means;
And the special district upon special district taxing merry-go-round!
By voting NO you send the JPA the same message Governor Schwarzenegger sent the Legislature; enough is enough!
