Rebuttal to the Argument in Favor of Measure E

They say "Classrooms are overcrowded…". The truth: total enrollment from 2000 to 2003 has declined from 6290 to 5039. Does that sound overcrowded to you?

They say Measure E "…will establish community-based educational centers in Hollister and the greater Morgan Hill Area.". The truth: they are already established.

They say Measure E is needed because "roofs leak, pipes are corroded, and the inadequate power system causes frequent blackouts". And that costs $108,000,000 plus interest for the next 30-40 years??? The truth: according to their tentative costs estimates, fixing the boiler, pipes, and power comes to $8,000,000, not $108,000,000. Shouldn't regular maintenance be part of the annual budget?

They say a "Citizens' Oversight Committee of business/public safety leaders and construction/finance experts will ensure "no frills" spending…". Who will appoint this Committee? Answer: the same people who used Gavilan funds to put this measure on the ballot. Will they appoint a truly critical committee or their supporters?

They say "State laws prohibit use of bond funds for administrators' salaries". Yet salaries currently take 81% of their current (2003) annual budget of $18,914,525. Passage of Measure E will allow them to move more funds from the "General Operating Expenses" (currently 12% of the budget) into salaries.

Measure E is a bad idea at a bad time. It's too much money and we, the taxpayers, can't afford it.
