Rebuttal to argument in favor of Measure G.

Union School District is going to be forced to close two schools?

This is what the Union School District had already said they were going to do when they last considered asking the community for an increase in property taxes. They didn't have the student population to justify the schools they had, and a few teachers had already decided and declared they were going to retire.

One would think that this would be the end of the issue. Why do we find ourselves voting on a new parcel tax of $195 PER YEAR?

What we really wonder is why, in the face of declining enrollments, the Union School District hasn't already closed extraneous schools? The Public School System was created to teach our children, not to create a pork program in the face of declining demand.

Those who argue against an increase in property taxes are not heartless. We want to see our children educated and our communities vibrant and alive. But we also believe it is disingenuous to talk about how an increase in our property taxes is going to increase our property values. An even better mechanism for increasing property values would be for our schools to be administered in a frugal and efficient manner.

Winston Churchill certainly knew better: "We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."
